Group Therapy

Group Therapy at Tulip Hill

Group therapy is a form of therapy in which several people come together and work closely with one or more therapists to resolve any problems they may have.

At Tulip Hill, we believe that group therapy is an integral part of treatment. Group therapy is built on camaraderie and a desire to help one another. It plays a positive role in our treatment programs and has proven to be highly effective.

Advantages of Substance Abuse Group Treatment

At Tulip Hill, our medical professionals lead our group therapy sessions. Beneficial for people struggling with substance abuse and mental health conditions, these sessions provide a warm, accepting, and safe space for those in attendance.

During group therapy, individuals are encouraged to share their experiences and fears with the rest of the group. Not only does this enable our team of therapists to observe and assess our clients, but it provides an opportunity for them to uncover how they can best support those in need.

Additionally, group therapy allows many people to seek advice and guidance from others who know how they feel. It also provides an opportunity to learn from others.

In many instances, when an individual realizes that someone else has overcome the problems they face, they find the courage to continue the battle.

Types of Group Therapy Offered by Tulip Hill

At Tulip Hill, we offer several types of group therapy. Typically, clients are assigned a specific group therapy based on the problems they may need to address.

Below you can find out more about the five types of group therapy offered at Tulip Hill.

  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) - The therapist focuses on correcting harmful and erroneous thinking patterns and mindsets during a CBT group therapy session. Here, those in attendance are encouraged to share their experiences.
  • Interpersonal group therapy - In these sessions, therapy focuses on interpersonal relationships and their effects.
  • Psychoeducational group therapy - An additional type of CBT therapy, psychoeducational group therapy helps members understand their disorders and issues.
  • Skills development group therapy - When employed, skills development group therapy helps our clients uncover how to improve their social skills.
  • Support groups therapy - These groups provide members and their families with support and care.

Group Therapy vs. Support Groups

While group therapy and support groups provide our clients with care, it's essential to distinguish the difference between them.

Support groups, for example, help people come to terms with their current situation. In contrast, group therapy aims to uncover how people can make changes to their lives. For purposes of substance abuse treatment, we utilize group therapy as a component of our overall treatment program.

Upon completing treatment with us, we encourage our patients to attend support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA) to help them maintain sobriety.

Getting the Most Out of Group Therapy

Before starting group therapy, we recommend considering the following tips:

  • Be as open as possible
  • Participate in the group experience
  • Contribute to discussions

It is also important to remember that you are not alone. Many of the other group members will be experiencing similar issues.

At Tulip Hill, group therapy is utilized to help clients fighting substance abuse disorders rebuild their interpersonal relationships and reconnect to their communities. Below, we share the many reasons that group therapy remains popular.

You’re Not Alone Anymore

When a person goes through withdrawal and decides to overcome their struggles with substances, they can feel incredibly lonely. In some instances, they might become more prone to mental health disorders, such as depression.

In these situations, it is helpful to show them that they still belong to a community and that other people are walking a similar path. Our professionals believe in helping clients come out of their cocoons and feel connected to other people by placing them in a group.

Practicing New Skills

When group therapy commences, our clients find a safe space to practice the skills they’ve gained in individual therapy. These groups then act as the practice field to determine how their interpersonal relationships can be managed going forward.

Broad Range of Feedback

Another benefit of group therapy is the broad range of feedback that you receive in a typical session. After a group member has shared something, they’ll receive feedback from the therapist and other group members. Consequently, they’ll have an opportunity to reflect on it from multiple perspectives.

Improved Communication Skills

We recommend group therapy primarily because of its significant impact on our clients' communication skills and interpersonal relationships. In these groups, the relationship between the individual and group strengthens. Under the guidance of the group therapist, clients learn how to discuss their thoughts and feelings without suppressing themselves or others.
