The dual diagnosis approach
People who struggle with addiction often suffer from co-occurring mental health conditions. Alcohol and other substances are often used as a way of self-medicating depression, anxiety, and a variety of other symptoms. The effects of untreated co-occurring conditions can be profound and studies have shown that treating them alongside addiction provides the most successful outcomes for clients. By treating each individual holistically, our client’s are able to address their substance or alcohol addiction and develop healthy coping skills to manage their mental health symptoms at the same time.
Treating the addiction itself is only a part of your recovery. For those who have experienced drug and alcohol treatment in the past, you know that life after treatment is not always easy. The stressors and triggers that once pulled you in the direction of addiction don’t always go away entirely. That’s why we take a more holistic approach at Tulip Hill.
Case Management Services
Navigating the early stages of substance abuse treatment can often be very complex. Case managers assist the clinical team in improving better outcomes for our clients by making sure they are prepared with the life skills and resources necessary to maintain long term recovery.
In the beginning stages of our program each client is individually assessed for their specific case management needs. This comprehensive care may include anything from correspondence with legal representatives to coordination of medical providers, resume building or facilitation of educational objectives. Clients meet weekly with their case manager throughout our continuum of care to coordinate and achieve stated goals.
The primary functions are to provide assessment, planning, links to outside support services when necessary and advocacy for each of our clients. This support is a vital part of the Tulip Hill journey because it addresses multiple aspects of each client’s life and wellbeing while keeping them engaged in treatment.
A critical piece of the clinical program at Tulip Hill Recovery is individual therapy. Upon admission, clients are assigned a primary therapist whom they meet with a minimum of once per week throughout the duration of their treatment. We believe the rapport that is built between client and therapist is impactful in early recovery, while clients struggle with daily life stressors.
This relationship also helps the client feel safe to explore underlying issues that they often have never shared before; much of the healing process can begin with a strong therapeutic relationship. Various techniques are used by clinicians because we aim to individualize treatment to each client, and utilize the modalities that are most helpful to the individual client.
Some of these sessions may include:
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy
- Motivational Interviewing
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
- Narrative Therapy
At Tulip Hill Recovery, we feel passionately about the importance of group therapy. As research indicates, group therapy is one of the most effective modalities in addiction treatment.
Addiction is an isolating disease that perpetuates feelings of shame and grief. Through the use of group therapy, clients are able to begin reconnecting with others in a healthy, meaningful way. A sense of community is critical for someone in recovery, and we use various therapy modalities to help clients learn to be vulnerable, trust, and recognize that they are not alone.
Group therapy helps to assist clients in the change process through experiential exercises, challenging denial systems, psychoeducation, and process groups which help explore the underlying issues that exacerbate addiction.
