Opiates vs. Opioids: What’s the Difference?

Home Blog Opiates vs. Opioids: What’s the Difference?

The terms “opiate” and “opioid” are often used interchangeably when they are actually different forms of substance. They share the same roots in that they are derived from the poppy plant, but it is the form of their derivative that is different.

Opiates are natural, organic derivatives of poppy plants. Examples of opiates include:

  • Opium
  • Heroin
  • Morphine
  • Codeine

Opioids are synthesized substances that originate from the poppy plant or have parts that originate from the poppy plant. These are typically what are used as prescription medications in opioids, such as oxycodone or hydrocodone.

Opiates vs. Opioids — Both are Addictive and Dangerous

In a manner of speaking, it’s not too important to differentiate between opiates vs. opioids. Both types of substances, whether obtained legally or illegally, can cause crippling addictions that can negatively affect your daily life and your health.

On the treatment side of things, of course it’s important to differentiate between opiates vs. opioids to ensure that clients receive the right type of treatment. But, for the average person who is struggling with an addiction, know that you should look for treatment from a professional regardless of whether your substance of choice is natural opiate or a synthesized opioid.
